The Politics of the English Grain Trade, 1315-1815

The Politics of the English Grain Trade is a five-year AHRC funded project based between the Universities of Oxford and Utrecht. The project seeks to understand the politics of the English grain trade between 1315 and 1815 against the background of fluctuations in the balance of population and food supply, from famine susceptibility through a period of self-sufficiency to the beginnings of structural dependence on imports. Alongside the political economy of the English grain supply, the project also explores shifting popular politics and cultural values that shaped regulation and prompted action, using the concept of commodification to understand these issues. For more on the project see our about pages.
